Improving Dairy Cow Welfare: A Modern Approach

Modern dairy farming must prioritize cow welfare.  Consumer demand and ethical concerns require a more comprehensive approach than traditional methods.  While older methods, like farm visits using protocols such as the Welfare Quality® system, offer valuable benchmarks (good feeding, housing, health, behavior), they are time-consuming and provide only occasional snapshots.  Technology offers a better, continuous solution.

Sensors are key. Until recently, farmers primarily relied on visual observations and manual records to assess cow welfare. Now, accelerometers track cow activity (lying, standing, eating, etc.), revealing comfort and mobility. Milk meters monitor milk production, an indicator of health, though not the sole measure of welfare. Combining sensor data with farm records (e.g., age, illnesses) provides a detailed picture of each cow’s well-being, allowing for early problem detection. However, traditional sensor-based assessments provide only partial insights—new technologies such as computer vision and video analytics enable a more comprehensive and objective evaluation of cow welfare.

Data analysis is crucial. Machine learning algorithms allow for the creation of predictive models capable of classifying cows’ welfare (good, moderate, poor). While farm-specific models are more accurate, this technology enables continuous, real-time monitoring, improving efficiency. We enhance this approach by integrating machine learning models trained on both sensor data and video analytics, allowing for a more precise and actionable welfare assessment.

Milking parlors are ideal for data integration. The milking parlor offers opportunities for deeper analysis beyond milk yield alone. Real-time heart rate and variability monitoring during milking detects stress. In-line milk testing identifies mastitis early. However, our approach goes further—by analyzing harmful interactions, prolonged milking times, and operator handling practices, we provide deeper insights into how parlor management impacts cow welfare.

To improve cow welfare, farms сould:

  • Implement advanced monitoring (video analytics, accelerometers, milk meters, heart rate monitors).
  • Develop and regularly update predictive models using both sensor and video data.
  • Integrate milking parlor analytics (harmful interactions, operator performance, prolonged milking times).
  • Establish clear procedures and train staff in handling best practices.
  • Prioritize prompt intervention when welfare issues arise.
